Mar 08, 2010 New inspection program for bridge and gantry cranes Worksafe WA says is to begin an inspection program looking at safety standards of bridge and gantry cranes.

The inspection will focus on raising awareness of the safety risks associated with cranes, and ensure employers have the information required to comply with the laws, according to a press release.

There are thousands of bridge and gantry cranes across the state, and most factories, warehouses and workshop have at least one unit, the organisation says. It decided to launch the program after encountering many mechanical failures with ageing cranes over the years, such as the recent collapse of cranes at Southampton port, UK, which we reported earlier.

The program will inspect cranes of all lifting capacities in both metropolitan and major regional areas of WA. A checklist will be used to ensure consistency in inspections.

The program will focus on any alterations to the cranes, maintenance and inspection programs, the general condition of the cranes, maintenance access, records, training and licensing of personnel, and the condition of the lifting gear.

Intermodal transportation: The next wave?Holidays are almost over, for those lucky enough to go on vacation. I spent my time away from the sea, and well above sea level. Just for reassurance. As you might know, the majority of Dutch grounds are below sea level (about 65%), and we keep dry feet by pumping water. Without that, we would build our sandcastle around "Amersfoort at the Sea" (a city some 80km inland). However, spending time in the Alps, some 800m above sea level, my rectangular box driven mind did not come to a complete standstill, wondering about hinterland transportation.
