Traffic volumes at the UK's major ports rose by four percent in the year ending Q2 2011 compared to that of the same period the year prior, according to UK's Department for Transport's Port Freigh Statistics.

The number of units of all handled cargo remained virtually unchanged during the two yearly periods ending in the second quarter of 2010 and in 2011.

During the second quarter of 2011 tonnage rose by six percent to that of the second period of 2010, while the number of units fell by four percent in Q2 2011.

The publication presented by the Department for Transport provides a summary of statistics on freight handled by major UK ports on a quarterly basis.
