  • Cranes part of terminal operators R438.3 million investment in container handling capacity in Durban

South Africa’s Transnet Port Terminals (TPT) has ordered six Liebherr mobile harbor cranes to be delivered to Durban Port.

The additional cranes are a part of TPT’s R438.3 million investment to boost container handling capacity at Durban’s ro-ro and Maydon Wharf Terminal.

A contract was agreed with Liebherr Werk Nenzing yesterday, according to TPT.

“The investment in these assets is part of our aggressive drive to improve infrastructure and facilities at all our terminals," said Karl Socikwa, TPT Chief Executive.

The contract will contribute to the department of public enterprise's supplier development programme, added Socikwa.

“We have committed with Liebherr to implement local supplier development initiatives for a period of five years, to ensure that in future South African companies will have the competence and expertise to manufacture component parts as well as fully assembled cranes and other specialised maritime equipment,” said Socikwa .

TPT has acquired a total of 15 cranes over the last nine months to increase productivity levels at its terminals, including the purchase of two cranes for its Ngqura (Coega) container terminal in the Eastern Cape.

TPT is a division of state-owned freight, logistics and transport company Transnet.
