TBA completes training program with CONTROLS at the Port of Göteborg

27 Oct 2009 - Terminal Handling

For the Port of Göteborg, CONTROLS works with CATOS, the TOS supplied by Korean manufacturer Total Soft Bank (TSB). It was the first time that TBA had deployed CONTROLS with CATOS.

With CONTROLS, the Port of Göteborg was able to train its staff on CATOS in realistic circumstances. Rather than being trained on just the theory, CONTROLS demonstrates what happens in real life. Users interact with a "virtual terminal" by means of emulation. The consequences of their actions and decisions are tangible, not just theoretic: a crane moves, a problem occurs and needs solving, vessels arrive and depart. In addition, as experiments can be
run up to four times faster than real-time, and different scenarios can be set, a user can learn about various situations in a shorter amount of time. Learning curves are steeper and the new TOS is implemented quicker and more efficiently.

The training is particularly aimed at operational level employees, such as vessel planners, yard planners and equipment dispatchers. KPI’s for specific objectives can be set and tracked, and parts of the experiment can be replayed for a better understanding of the situation.

Patrik Foureaux, Project leader in the Port of Göteborg, says: “Even though we had planned for these trainings from the start, and TBA had already explained to us the benefits of CONTROLS, we were still enormously surprised by the impact of the trainings. The system allowed us to really see how the system will work in real life. In fact, the experience was so powerful that we changed the schedule for our operators to double shifts and had everyone attend the training sessions.”

Klaas Pieter van Til, CEO of TBA, comments: “we are very glad to have shown that CONTROLS is not only valuable when testing a new TOS, but also greatly helps with training. The role that CONTROLS can play in all stages of the implementation circle, from testing, via training to fine-tuning, is once more confirmed.”
