In a bid to increase port competitiveness for the region, Guangdong Province in South China is making a whole host of decisions designed to improve operations at its Pearl River Delta container terminals.
Liu Xiaohua, vice director of Guangdong Provincial Transportation Department has said that initiatives such as encouraging collaboration between Pearl River Delta container terminals and simplifying customs rules are just some of the ways in which Guangdong is driving competition, according to the Journal of Commerce.
Xiaohua went on to say that China’s five-year plan is to reinforce hinterland connections around the Pearl River Delta region, saying: “We are cooperating with [the] Central South, as well as [the] West-South areas. For example, Hunan is relying on Guangdong’s port to work on imports and exports.”
In addition, improvements to the Nansha Railway are expected to have an impact on both bulk and container cargo transportation.
Commenting on various cities involved in Guangdong’s new clearance initiatives, Xiaohua said: “Now cargoes can move
freely in these areas, and they only have one platform to clear customs and reporting inspection, and this will have [a] great impact on the market.”
Xiaohua concluded: “We find the competitiveness of ports in the Pearl River Delta area is fierce. [Now] we are working on measures to consolidate the resources in this area, to make the ports [be]come competitive on the whole.”
