The extent of the Port of Southampton’s contribution, both to the regional and national economy, has been revealed in a new independent report.

Global consultant Arup has shown that the port contributes US$1.7 billion to the UK economy every year, including US$1.2 billion to the Solent region.

Over the past five years, Associated British Ports (ABP) has invested over US$171 million to help drive growth and secure jobs in Southampton.

Clive Thomas, ABP Southampton’s port manager, said: “These latest figures, underline yet again the vital contribution made to the regional and national economy by the Port of Southampton. Not only does it support thousands of jobs in the Solent region but thousands more across the country.”

He added: “Our cruise operation continues to grow, both in scale and in our reputation for customer service, and we are now the leading turnaround cruise port in Europe.”

The Port of Southampton is the fourth largest port in the UK and the leading port for car handling.

It has been recognised as the number one cruise port in the UK and Europe.
