Port of Seattle hosts largest container ships ever on Elliott Bay

10 Jun 2009 - Terminal Handling

The ships were repositioning containers in advance of the June 7 start of a new joint service by Maersk and CMA CGM.

“The fact that we’re prepared to handle these large vessels is a clear demonstration of our capabilities,” said Port of Seattle Managing Director Charlie Sheldon. “Seattle’s facilities, our deep water and the related infrastructure are up to the task.”

The new joint Maersk/CMA CGM service that begins on June 7 will have 14 vessels with a capacity of 6,500 TEUs each. The service will connect the Port of Seattle to Tanjung Pelepas, Hong Kong, Yantian, Shanghai and Busan. Seattle will be the first inbound port-of-call.
