The Board awarded the contract to Seoul, South Korea-based Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction Co. Ltd., which is expected to begin work Jan. 9, 2009 and complete the job July 20, 2010.
"Ship turnaround time and container loading and unloading is a key determinant in measuring a port\'s productivity by a container carrier," said Port President and CEO Gary P. LaGrange. "The addition of these two cranes will make the Port of New Orleans one of the most productive container ports in the United States."
Six multi-purpose gantry cranes will operate at the Napoleon Avenue Container Terminal when construction and installation of the two cranes is complete.
The cranes will be paid by a $24.6 million appropriation the Port received from the Louisiana Legislature this year. The remainder of the balance will be paid by the Board\'s capital budget.
"This vital capital investment is in anticipation of future growth of the Napoleon Avenue Container Terminal," LaGrange said.
The new cranes will have a 65-long-ton lift capacity, 110-foot lift height, 167-foot outreach and 75-foot back reach.
