PD Ports always working on a safety first philosophy

02 Oct 2009 - Port Planning

The scheme was rolled out across the PD Ports Group and every quarter suggestions were put forward by individuals or groups of employees on how best to improve. The suggested safety improvements concerned individuals and colleagues, as well as the workplace and workplace activities.

The best entry from each group was then appraised by PD Ports’ Divisional Safety Committee, with the most practical and cost effective suggestion being rewarded with £500 in high street shopping vouchers.

The successful entries from each quarter have now been considered as part of the scheme’s annual review, which was recently reviewed by the Group Health & Safety Committee. The winning suggestions for the annual award were selected by the Committee based on practicality and cost effectiveness.

On 22 September, a presentation ceremony took place at PD Ports’ headquarters in Middlesbrough, which saw David Robinson, PD Ports’ group chief executive officer and Russ McCallion, PD Ports’ group human resources director, present the overall winners with their share of the £2,000 annual award. The winning suggestions were from David Weller and Karl Nash, who are based at Teesport on the North east coast, as well as Colin Ling, Andy Hargreaves and Colin Wilkinson, who are all based at PD Ports’ Humber operations.

Mr McCallion was happy to confirm that the scheme would continue to run in 2009/10 and said he expects the coming year will bring even more winning ideas to help further improve the already excellent safety record at PD Ports.
