Australia-based NSW Ports has opened its third container terminal for handling agricultural exports at Port Botany in Sydney, reports Logistics Business Review.
The new terminal will double capacity at the port and will be run by Sydney International Container Terminals, a part of Hong Kong-based Hutchison Port Holdings.
Premier of New South Wales Mike Baird said: “Over US$300 million spent, there's close to 200 jobs here, and that's a great thing for the economy, it's a great thing for the port.”
Managing director of the Australian Logistics Council Michael Kilgariff said the new terminal at Port Botany is an important part of its freight solution: “If we are to move a lot of that freight around Australia we need the infrastructure to do it, so Hutchison Ports opening here will assist in ensuring we've got a very efficient freight system.”
NSW Ports operates two ports in Sydney, Port Botany and Port Kembla, under a 99-year lease from the New South Wales government.
