Nhava Sheva Container Terminal at JawaharlalNehru Port in India is to test paperless customs documentation over the next two months in an effort to ease congestion.

If successful, all government-owned ports in India will move to paperless customs documentation in the long-term, reports the Journal of Commerce.

The initiative is aimed at making it easier to do business with government-owned ports and could potentially cut dwell times for truckers.

In addition, paper documentation aims to reduce evacuation times per-container from five minutes to less than one minute, as well as reduce logistics costs.

Switching to an electronic system will also remove the hand-stamping process, which is a contributing factor of the congestion at Nheva Sheva Container Terminal.
