Newcastle Port to defend against terror

Newcastle Port in New South Wales, Australia has been encouraged by the Department of Infrastructure and Regional Development (DIRD) to review its security plans in response to heightened concerns about a terrorist attack in the region.

The Australian federal government has since raised the national terrorism public alert level from medium to high in response to fears concerning a terrorist attack.

The DIRD told the Australian Broadcasting Company that robust security measures are already in place at the port and there is no formal directive for additional actions.

However, the department said that, should there be any additional measures, increased maritime security-card checks, increased communications and port signage should be carried out at the port.
