Signe Bruun Jensen, Global Head of Sustainability at Maersk Line has pledged to cut the world’s largest shipping line’s CO2 emissions by 60% per container by the year 2020, compared to 2007, according to Maersk’s latest sustainability update.
PTI previously reported that Maersk Line had implemented its eco-friendly containers, which are painted with a special type of paint to reduce carbon emissions.
Signe Bruun Jensen said: “We lead the way in ‘doing more with less’. We constantly seek out innovative and commercially viable ways to reduce our environmental impacts, be it CO2 and other air emissions, ballast water, or the materials we use to build our vessels.
“Therefore we have set a bold target. We will reduce CO2 emissions per container moved by 60% by 2020 compared to levels from 2007.”
With the launch of this new CO2 reduction target, Maersk Line is accelerating its effort to reduce its carbon footprint whilst growing its business. The impact of this new target is a sustained decoupling of economic growth from CO2 emissions.
In 2014, Maersk Line also launched the Carbon Pact challenge. The Carbon Pact is a long-term partnership wherein Maersk Line commits to a CO₂ target specifically tailored to the business of the individual customer.
As part of the agreement, both companies also pledge to jointly drive transparency and promote more sustainable procurement, thus raising the bar for the entire industry.
Stephen Schueler, CCO at Maersk Line, said: “Maersk Line shares aspirations for sustainable, profitable growth with many of our customers. By committing to reducing supply-chain emissions, we’re demonstrating our commitment to delivering tangible carbon savings.”
As well as reducing its environmental impact, the container line is also planning to spend around US$15 billion on new ships and equipment.
Maersk Line saw a massive increase in profits for Q1, 2015, with an underlying profit increase of 18% to $1.3 billion.
