Largest U.S. ammunition port renews commitment to tideworks technology

Located in Southport, N.C., MOTSU is a major subordinate command of Surface Deployment and Distribution Command headquartered at Scott Air Force Base, Ill. It is one of only two Department of Defense (DOD) ports in the U.S. primarily designed for the shipment of munitions.

In 2006, MOTSU implemented customized versions of Tideworks’ Mainsail Terminal Management System® and Spinnaker Planning Management System®, leveraging the system’s integrated vessel, yard and rail planning tools. These two solutions were customized to capture MOTSU’s unique data fields and meet operational requirements of handling ammunition and explosive ordinance in a terminal setting. Tideworks also integrated the two solutions with multiple external tracking systems.

“We’ve worked with Tideworks in the past and were extremely pleased with the company’s willingness and ability to adapt its technology solutions to meet our specific needs,” said Sammie Wells, IT director for MOTSU. “Given the highly sensitive nature of the materials we transport, we require a TOS solution that not only increases efficiency of our operations, but also provides complete tracking and monitoring functionalities.”

In addition to migrating the TOS to the Linux operating system (OS), Tideworks will provide ongoing application systems support and database and OS administration. Tideworks’ TOS enables MOTSU to continue to improve the effectiveness of its operational tasks and meet rigorous requirements for tracking and monitoring certain explosive characteristics and materials.

“We are committed to providing our customers with innovative technology solutions to meet their unique operational requirements,” said Michael Schwank, president of Tideworks Technology. “We’re thrilled to continue our relationship with MOTSU.”
