India has begun work on a bridge along the Fen River in Tripura in order to connect its ports with ports in Bangladesh as a way of carrying goods and machineries between the two locations, according to Hellenic Shipping News.

PTI previously reported on India’s pledge to turn each of its 12 major ports into smart port cities at a total cost of around US$8 billion.

Sunil Bhowmik, Chief Engineer at Tripura Public Works Department, said: “We have started preliminary work and making DPR (Detailed Project Report) to build the all-important bridge over Feni river.

“After preparing the DPR within two months, it would be submitted to Tripura’s industries and commerce department, which is a nodal department for the project.

“Access to the Chittagong port and Ashuganj river port in Bangladesh are crucial for the northeastern states to ferry men and materials.”

India’s ports have seen positive port performance recently, with its growth soaring by almost 5% in the 2014-2015 fiscal year.

India’s Prime Minister, Narendra Modi is currently pushing ahead with plans to build a port in Chabahar, Iran, despite warnings made by the US to abandon the project.
