The Port of Hamburg continues its record performance, handling a total of 72.6 million tonnes in the first six months of 2014 – a 6.6% increase in the first six months of 2014.

Hamburg’s universal port with 50.7 million tonnes of predominantly container handling achieved a result of 4.8 million TEU, an increase of 6.8% (over which period, must relate the increase to a particular period, be it month, quarter, annual etc)

At 51.6 million tonnes in the first half of 2014, general cargo handling showed a gain of 8.8%.

Axel Mattern, member of the executive board of Port of Hamburg Marketing said that there had been an 8.2% increase in container handling in Hamburg since the previous year.

Executive board member Ingo Egloff said: “The port economy is specifically seeking and employing more workers.”

Hamburger Hafen and Logistik created 50 new jobs at Container Terminal Burchardkai at the end of July, and personnel service provider for the port GHB created 60 new jobs this year.

Seaborne cargo increased by an unforeseeable amount. in the first half of 2014, Hamburg received 244 ultra-large containerships with slot capacities of 10,000 TEU and more.

The result for the Port of Hamburg for 2014 was a total turnover of approximately 145 million tonnes and a container throughput of about 9.7 million TEU.

A judge’s decision on the deepening and widening of the River Elbe is expected in October and could mean more jobs for the port.
