Global Container Terminals (GCT), following more than four years of planning and development, has officially opened its expanded Global Terminal – New York/New Jersey’s first semi-automated terminal

In a statement, the US operator said that both importers and exporters operating out of the New York/New Jersey harbour now have the best ‘Big Ship Ready’ alternative to service cargo to the region faster, and more efficiently, whilst allowing for the harbour’s fastest processing and turnaround times.

GCT, who took delivery of the final five of its 20 new Rail Mounted Gantry (RMG) cranes last week, added that the ten stack expansion will more than double the current capacity of the terminal from 500,000 TEU to 1.1 million TEU annually. The company expects the enhanced facility to operate at full capacity in the third quarter of this year.

“The expansion team has been committed to ensure the facility serves our customers’ next generation of vessels quickly and reliably,” said Rich Ceci, project manager and vice president of IT at Global Container Terminals USA.

The timeline for the project has been busy to say the least. Global completed the 274-metre quay extension in May last year, before launching its impressive streamlined truck gate complex equipped with OCR and RFID tags two months later. The gate system, heralded by Ceci as “the best in the US and perhaps the world” can handle more than 5,000 transactions per day. Global also became the first terminal in North America to install the Navis N4 version 2.5 Terminal

Operating System (TOS) last month. On top of these accomplishments, Global has also been busy commissioning a plethora of new container handling equipment, including 17 Terex shuttle carriers and 20 semi-automatic RMGs supplied by Finnish crane manufacture Konecranes.

“It is gratifying to see the achievement of the company’s vision to develop a safer facility that meets the evolving needs of the industry while providing better working conditions for the workforce,” said Jim Devine, president and CEO of Global Container Terminals USA.

“We couldn’t have met our target without the skill and dedication of our project team and the support of the Port Authority of New York/New Jersey,” he added.
