DP World has announced that the first four of 50 rail mounted gantry (RMG) cranes for its new container terminal at its flagship Jebel Ali Port.

Jebel Ali’s new Container Terminal 3 (T3), due to open next year, will have an annual capacity of 4 million TEU. The facility will boast as many as 19 quay cranes along its 1,860 metre quay and a 17-metre draught to enable the simultaneous handling of four next generation ocean carriers. With its 70-hectare container yard, the overall capacity of the UAE port will rise to 19 million TEU and will be able to handle ten ultra large container ships (ULCS) at the same time.

The 600-tonne RMGs arriving at Jebel Ali’s docks today are nearly 50 metres wide and 32 metres high. They can lift single and twin TEU containers up to 50 tonnes from the trucks into a stack area of 10 containers wide and 6 containers high. Each RMG is able to cover a stack length of up to 1,200 metres.

In the first half of this year, an additional 1 million TEU capacity was added to Container Terminal 2 (T2) at Jebel Ali Port increasing current capacity to 15 million TEU.
