Eight diesel-driven rubber-tyred gantry (RTG) cranes at DP World's Jebel Ali port in Dubai are to be electrified by Cavotec.

In the project, the RTGs will be connected to the electric grid via motorised cable reels supplied by the engineering company.

Diesel-driven RTGs contribute significantly to the port’s overall diesel fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.

E-RTGs eliminate the need for conventional fossil fuels and cut emissions to zero at the point of use, reducing energy costs and improving air quality in and around the port.

Jebel Ali currently operates 146 RTGs, as well as 79 gantry cranes and 60 RMGs across two terminals. The Port handled a throughput of 11,600,000 TEUs in 2010, up 4.3% on 2009 figures.

“Through this project, Cavotec maintains its position as a leading innovator of energy efficient and environmentally friendly technologies in the ports and maritime industry in the Middle East,” says Juergen Strommer, Managing Director Cavotec Middle East.

“We are delighted to be working with DP World’s flagship Jebel Ali port on this project, and we applaud them for their commitment to sustainability.”
