Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT), India’s largest container port, handled 4.48 million TEU in 2015, indicating a growth of 0.1%, which could be due to difficulties relating to labour and congestion, according to the Journal of Commerce.

APM Terminals Mumbai handled 1.91 million TEU in 2015, which is 2.4% less than in 2014 and accounts for 42.6% of JNPT’s total throughput.

Arun Jaitley, Finance Minister of India, said: “If major ports don’t overhaul their structures, they will seriously fall behind in competition with minor ports.”

JNPT is in the middle of a major capacity expansion program, including construction of a fourth container terminal.
The 2.4 million TEU capacity terminal is due for completion at the end of 2017 and will be operated by leading port operator PSA International.
