CMA CGM Mega-Ship Runs Aground

CMA CGM’s mega containership Vasco De Gama ran aground off the Port of Southampton just after midnight on August 22, 2016, reported Fleetmon.

The ship was then docked in Southampton after being aground for 30 minutes, and damages are being assessed. There is no news on the damage as of yet.

Named after the famous Portuguese explorer, the Vasco De Gama is a 17859 TEU capacity Explorer class container ship and was travelling ton Southampton from Algeciras.

Earlier in August, 2016, CMA CGM Group announced the launch of a new EURAF 6 service, which will offer enhanced service coverage with a second loop direct from West Mediterranean to West African strategic markets.

This came on the back of news that, In July, 2016, a Maersk vessel ran aground in the Suez Canal after its rudder system had failed to operate, and had to be towed with the help of 12 tugs.

The Port of Southampton had the 13,892 TEU APL Vanda make a controlled grounding on its approach back in February, 2016.
