After labour and environmental concerns threatened to disrupt the biggest port project in Costa Rica, APM Terminals (APMT) will continue with the construction of the project which is expected to be operational in 2018.
The Moin Container Terminal is already under expansion and is anticipated to cost around US$670 million to complete, according to the American Journal of Transportation.
Paul Gallie, Managing Director at APMT Central America, said: “The concession clock is ticking. It means that we have, under our concession agreement, 36 months to build the first phase of the terminal.”
The project aims to reach a total capacity of 2.7 million TEU at a total cost of around $1 billion.
The project has received criticism, with dock worker unions saying that the new port will jeopardise state operations and allow APMT to dominate Costa Rican trade.
Gallie concluded the matter by saying: “So far we have won all (the lawsuits). We are not worried about it.”
