PTI TOC Europe technology round-up
Port Technology International was on site at the recent TOC Europe 2009, witnessing the unveling of a number of new technologies and product launches, including in-house demonstrations and a bevy of engaging and informative information. The theme of productivity and efficiency was on the lips of all who attended.
First up was Tideworks who announced that Ter Haak Group has selected them to upgrade its terminal operating platform at the company’s Amerikahaven multipurpose terminal in Amsterdam, Netherlands, see the full story here. ABB Crane Systems had attendee's buzzing with an on-site demonstration of its newly launched Training Simulator CS800. Giving operators the ability to be trained in a safe and authentic environment, it's as close to the real thing as one can get. Click here for more PTI exclusive in-depth technical articles on crane simulators. Jade Software Corporation were on hand showcasing the latest version of its successful Jade Master Terminal. Jade claim to be the only fully object oriented container, general cargo and bulk terminal operating system.
Liebherr has recently launched its newest product, the LHM 120 mobile harbour crane, with a miximum lifting capacity of 42 tonnes and a mazimum outreach of 30 metres. Liebherr have begun 2009 well, with a number of significant contracts in emerging markets.

Intermodal transportation: The next wave?
Holidays are almost over, for those lucky enough to go on vacation. I spent my time away from the sea, and well above sea level. Just for reassurance. As you might know, the majority of Dutch grounds are below sea level (about 65%), and we keep dry feet by pumping water. Without that, we would build our sandcastle around "Amersfoort at the Sea" (a city some 80km inland).
However, spending time in the Alps, some 800m above sea level, my rectangular box driven mind did not come to a complete standstill, wondering about hinterland transportation.
