Since the 1960's, Strainstall Marine has been committed to measuring, monitoring and assessing strain, stress and load for the marine industry in order to maintain operational safety and to facilitate efficient management, inspection and maintenance at ports, jetties and terminals. This has given us unrivalled expertise in areas such as:
• Loading Arm Position Monitoring
Strainstall's marine safety systems work year after year in difficult and often hazardous environments. Reliability is essential, as vessels and equipment on the move around the world depend on the systems to ensure safe operation. Strainstall have experience in providing long-term solutions for the unpredictable and often severe challenges posed by marine operations.
Our application software is developed and maintained by Strainstall Marine, providing us with an unprecedented level of control over a project that enables the final design to be configured to the exact requirements of the customer, and ensures reliability and a simpler installation.
Whether your project is large or small, you can rely on Strainstall Marine to help you reach your safety and performance goals.
DockAlert - Vessel Approach Monitoring |
Vessel approach monitoring provides real-time data on speed, distance off and drift off as a vessel approaches its mooring. A high accuracy system that increases during the critical approach phase and provides alarms in the event the vessel moves outside pre-set parameters. The system uses two eye-safe lasers to measure the distance of the bow and stern relative to the jetty and relays data to the jetty control room and hand held pagers on ship, or to a large digit display mounted on the jetty. |
|
MoorAlert – Mooring Load Monitoring |
Provides an accurate indication of mooring loads in multi-line mooring spreads and enables each mooring line to be pre-tensioned according to each vessel’s individual mooring scheme. These loads are measured by strain gauged load measuring pins installed in the quick release mooring hooks. Provides alarms should tensions exceed pre-set limits.

BerthManager – Jetty Monitoring System |
The BerthManager total jetty management system is the result of Strainstall Marine's complete understanding of the value of interactive data during the critical phases of vessel approach and mooring management. The system incorporates DockAlert docking system, MoorAlert mooring load monitoring and environmental and metocean monitoring packages. This combines the best technology available into a single integrated jetty management system to provide a user-friendly interface for operators with clear displays of data. Advanced information and data logging capabilities give real-time analysis of load, drift-off and environmental conditions to ensure jetty safety, whatever the stresses and weather conditions.

Towing Load Monitoring |
Strainstall Marine's towing load monitoring system is designed to give towing vessel masters a direct reading of tension in a towing hawser. It consists of load cells or a load measuring pin fitted to the towing hook, quick release mooring hook or winch, plus a readout/alarm warning unit which can be set with overload thresholds to suit the gauge of rope or wire being used for the towing operation. |
|
Crane Weighing & Overload Monitoring |
Strainstall Marine manufacture a comprehensive range of crane weighing and overload protection systems to meet the needs of marine crane users and improve crane safety. They can be either retrofitted to existing cranes or to new cranes. Each crane weighing and overload system comprises a load cell to sense the load and an amplifier with trip relays which can be used to stop the lift or set off alarms. |
|
Loading Arm Position Monitoring |
Our loading arm position monitoring system uses sensors incorporated into the loading arms to monitor their position to ensure that they are used within their operational envelopes. Should the loading arms be operated outside their defined scope, it is possible that during loading/unloading the seals may be damaged and allow spillage of the cargo.

Load Cells, Shackles and Pins |
Strainstall design and manufacture a range of high quality standard and bespoke load cells, load shackles and load pins, with a particular emphasis on suitability for use in harsh environments, hazardous areas and subsea. Our 40 years of expertise is utilised for the many unique applications we are asked to provide solutions for - and we are often the only company who can do so. We have a total in-house design, calibration and repair capability, and to support our product range we also provide complete measurement systems and a range of associated instrumentation.

Strain Rings |
Strain rings are attached to steel structures to measure the levels of strain they are being subjected to. They are ideal for retrofitting to existing structures where load cells would be difficult to fit. Highly accurate and easy to install and remove, above and sub-sea versions are available. The strain rings produce an electrical signal based on the amount of tension detected, which is converted to a load value by Strainstall intrinsically safe amplifiers and displayed on a local digital panel meter and/or transmitted to a control room PC display. |
|
Towing Hooks |
Quick Release Towing Hooks enable ships to be towed safely under severe working conditions. The towing hooks have a quick release mechanism that allows the towing line to be instantaneously disengaged under full load to ensure the safety of the tug and personnel. The hook can be released from the wheel house by pulling the release wire or by pushing a button. At full safe working load it is possible to release the towing hooks manually, requiring a load of approximately 15kg. |
|
Quick Release Mooring Hooks |
Quick release mooring hooks enable ship mooring lines to be secured safely and with minimum effort. Standard hooks available are single, double, triple, quadruple, double back to back and quadruple back to back. Safe working loads vary from 30 tonnes to 200 tonnes, with proof loads of up to 1.5 times the safe working load. |
|
Rugged Foot Switch |
The patented rugged foot switch is ideally suited for use in harsh marine and offshore environments. It is unique as it has no moving parts, so its function is unaffected by exposure to weather, salt, water and other abrasive materials. |
