Effective dust control is becoming increasingly important to ports and shipping operations and bulk material handlers around the world, recognized as a key to worker safety, environmental stewardship and community goodwill. Dust problems frequently arise during loading, hauling and other operations involving dry bulk materials such as coal, cement, rock/aggregate, grain, sand and biomass fuels.
Conventional approaches include hand-held spraying, watering trucks or portable sprinklers, which are all an attempt to prevent dust from becoming airborne by wetting the dusty surface. Unfortunately, these methods typically produce large droplets that can actually disturb dust particles upon impact and cause them to become airborne. These droplets are far too large to control airborne dust, and the techniques are usually labor-intensive, requiring one or more staff members to operate. They also tend to use large amounts of water, often saturating materials and contributing to run-off.
In 2004, a small but innovative industry group saw the need for equipment that could deliver both surface dust management and airborne suppression, helping to create a safer, cleaner workplace and contribute to a healthier environment. With that realization, they formed a new company called Dust Control Technology® and developed the first DustBoss® products.
Particle Control by Design
DustBoss equipment is designed to produce a powerful atomized mist, based on the principle of creating millions of tiny droplets and delivering them at relatively high velocity over a wide coverage area, inducing collisions with dust particles and driving them to the ground. The method has proven well suited for controlling dust in a very wide range of bulk materials, one of the few technologies capable of delivering dust suppression via airborne capture AND surface wetting. The DustBoss is currently serving in a number of ports, shipping and storage facilities around the world.
The design starts with a series of special nozzles to atomize the water into droplets 50-200 microns in size, the optimum for particle attraction. In the largest unit, the atomized spray is launched by a powerful 25 HP fan that generates 30,000 CFM (nearly 850 cubic meters per minute), giving it a range of 200 feet (approx. 60 meters) or more. It can cover nearly 125,000 square feet -- about 2.5 football fields -- from a single location, yet the carriage-mounted device is completely portable, allowing it to be located wherever it’s needed most on a given day. All of the units are manufactured from industrial-strength materials, and are designed to run all day unattended. Some customers operate their DustBoss equipment 24 hours a day.
Dust Control Technology is a leader in dust management solutions, with equipment successfully serving mining operations, quarries, port facilities, material recyclers, crushing operations and other applications. The company has sold hundreds of units to customers in more than a dozen different countries to date, while steadily building a network of dealers to deliver expert sales and support across the globe. All DustBoss equipment carries an industry-best 3-year / 3,000 hour warranty and is covered by an absolute satisfaction guarantee.
DustBoss equipment helps reduce labor costs vs. manual sprays, freeing up manpower for more important tasks. The units also use less water than hoses and sprinklers, and can be fully automated into a computer-controlled network managed by customized software. Some customers have realized payback in less than six months, netting an annual cost savings of more than $50,000. Equipment is available for purchase, rent-to-own or for lease from the industry’s largest dust suppression rental fleet.
