Recession stalls Hutchinson Ports' hopes for expansion
Hutchison Ports (UK) is asking planners to extend the period of consent for its proposed Bathside Bay container terminal in Harwich, UK, because the economic downturn means the development is unlikely to proceed before 2016.
Recession prompts HPUK's Bathside Bay planning extension request.utchison admits extension will unlikely be created with the ten-year planning grant. HPUK is currently considering using the site temporarily for offshore wind farm work. “The original consent was received in 2006 and permitted construction of the deepsea container terminal. The consent requires construction to commence within 10 years," Paul Davey, HPUK’s head of corporate affairs, said in a letter to Harwich International Port local authority liaison committee members. “As a result of the global economic downturn and resulting recession in the UK, it is currently forecast that demand in the UK will not justify construction within that timeframe.” HPUK hopes the period of consent can be extended by five years to 2021.
Intermodal transportation: The next wave?
Holidays are almost over, for those lucky enough to go on vacation. I spent my time away from the sea, and well above sea level. Just for reassurance. As you might know, the majority of Dutch grounds are below sea level (about 65%), and we keep dry feet by pumping water. Without that, we would build our sandcastle around "Amersfoort at the Sea" (a city some 80km inland).
However, spending time in the Alps, some 800m above sea level, my rectangular box driven mind did not come to a complete standstill, wondering about hinterland transportation.
