Port of St Petersburg orders new container handling equipment
The Seaport of St Petersburg has ordered twelve new Kalmar terminal tractors and one Kalmar empty container handler, for its newly-built Container Terminal.
Ten of the machines, supplied by Cargotec, have already been delivered, with the remaining units scheduled for delivery in the first quarter of this year. "This dependability is complemented by Cargotec's local service and parts availability." The new terminal - situated at the fourth cargo area of the Sea Port of St Petersburg - is part of International Transport Holding UCLH BV, incorporating the controlling interests of five other stevedoring companies in northwest Russia and two ports in the country's southern region. The first phase of the terminal construction commenced in 2008 with the plan to accommodate an annual handling capacity of 350,000 TEU. Implementation of this project required an investment of $120 million.
Intermodal transportation: The next wave?
Holidays are almost over, for those lucky enough to go on vacation. I spent my time away from the sea, and well above sea level. Just for reassurance. As you might know, the majority of Dutch grounds are below sea level (about 65%), and we keep dry feet by pumping water. Without that, we would build our sandcastle around "Amersfoort at the Sea" (a city some 80km inland).
However, spending time in the Alps, some 800m above sea level, my rectangular box driven mind did not come to a complete standstill, wondering about hinterland transportation.
