Jul 01, 2009 CANopen seminar series in the EU CAN in Automation (CiA) GmbH has scheduled a CANopen seminar series in the EU for 2009. The one-day seminars provide an overview about the CANopen higher-layer protocol. The English-spooken seminars will take place in Nuremberg (September 22nd), Tampere (September 29th), Katowice (October 8th), Amsterdam (October 21st), Brussels (October 22nd), Zurich (November 10th), Prague (November 12th) and Stockholm (November 19th). The information provided in the Seminar will enable development engineers and system integrators to judge if CANopen is suitable for their application.

Attendees will receive a comprehensive insight into the technical opportunities of CANopen. Basic and additional CANopen functionality will be discussed (e.g. CANopen Manager, Layer Setting Services, CANopen Safety). Important aspects of system design will be demonstrated. The CiA trainer will also explain the CANopen device and application profiles that enable to manufacture devices with a high degree of “plug-andplay” capability. Furthermore multi-level networking is considered. Well-specified applications such as e.g. CANopen-to-CANopen-routers, TCP/IP-to-CANopen-gateways and CANopen-to-AS-interface-gateways are discussed.

Attendees of the CANopen seminar should be familiar with the basics of the CAN protocol, therefore CiA has scheduled a halfday CAN seminar in Nuremberg (September 21st). Further information and online registration is available at www.can-cia.org or telephone +49-911-928819-0, or via e-mail to headquarters@can-cia.org.

Intermodal transportation: The next wave?Holidays are almost over, for those lucky enough to go on vacation. I spent my time away from the sea, and well above sea level. Just for reassurance. As you might know, the majority of Dutch grounds are below sea level (about 65%), and we keep dry feet by pumping water. Without that, we would build our sandcastle around "Amersfoort at the Sea" (a city some 80km inland). However, spending time in the Alps, some 800m above sea level, my rectangular box driven mind did not come to a complete standstill, wondering about hinterland transportation.
