Sep 24, 2008 First ocean carrier to call at EUROGATE Tanger

Tangier, Morocco - The first ocean carrier is today calling at the EUROGATE Tanger container terminal. The carrier in question is CMA CGM’s main vessel “Otello”, which will discharge five disassembled Kalmar RTGs.

The first regular service will start on 8 October 2008. This will be CMA CGM’s Far East – Northern Europe service (FAL 1), which deploys vessels with a loading capacity of 8,500 TEUs. The first such vessel to call at Tangier will be CMA CGM’s “La Traviata”.

“Although the official opening ceremony of EUROGATE Tanger will not be until spring next year, we will be fully operational by the end of this year. We are now starting to handle ocean carriers and will soon increase the number of services”, says Domenico BagalĂ , President of the Management Board of EUROGATE Tanger.

EUROGATE Tanger currently has 450 m of quayside and five container gantry cranes. By the end of the year, the quay length will be extended to 810 m. Additional three container gantry cranes are on order for delivery in January 2009.

Port planning versus economic crisisWhen travelling around the world and visiting ports, I noticed that the financial crisis has not seemed to effect the ports as yet. The papers are full of disaster, but still people keep buying. However, we should still expect that the surge for more capacity will be affected by the problems in the US and in Europe. Maybe the focus will divert to South America and Africa, while Asia keeps developing at a high pace.
